These are a few of the types of wedding cake toppers that you could look at:

Bride and Groom Cake Topper
The traditional bride and groom topper has the groom in a tux, and the bride in a white gown.  You do not have to stick with this, unless you want to.  You could have the happy couple in hiking gear, in military gear, in scuba gear, wearing beachwear, or in whatever attire suits your own particular interests.  You can even find comical bride and groom wedding cake toppers, or go for a Disney topper?  You can stick with elegant if that is what you prefer.  You are certainly not going to be limited in choice for a bride and groom wedding cake topper.  

Flowers
You can choose whatever you want with regards to flowers, and can certainly create a memorable topper with them.   You can more or less choose the colors to match in with your wedding theme, and if you like they could trail down the sides of your wedding cake.  You can go the route of real flowers (perhaps preserved with sugar water), or have your decorator make you icing flowers.  If the flowers are edible (this also applies to the real flowers), then no-one will have to remove them – unless of course you want to preserve them with your other keepsakes.  If you decide to go with real flowers, make sure someone is specifically in charge of getting the flowers from the florist in time for them to be placed decoratively on the cake. 

A Themed Topper
You can of course go for a wedding cake topper that will match your particular wedding theme.  As an example if you have a beach themed wedding you could pick beautiful sea shells for the topper.   Whatever your chosen wedding theme, you are going to be able to find a topper that will match.  In fact, there are wedding cake toppers available for almost anything that interests you both – golfers, firefighters, The Simpsons, dolphins, bears, horses, frogs, trees, knights and damsels, rednecks (really!), Harley Davidson motorcycles, cars, chariots, baseball, doves, butterflies, etc.

Crystal Wedding Cake Topper
If your wedding is going to be an elegant affair you may want to have an intricate crystal piece as the topper on your wedding cake.   You could choose the traditional bride and groom, or you could go for monogrammed initials, a pair of graceful swans, roses, lilies, bells, or even hearts.  Some pieces of crystal  can be engraved with your initials or the date of your wedding.  This would be a lovely keepsake for you. 

The variety of wedding cake toppers is immense so once you have decided on the style of topper you want, you can then concentrate on choosing the right design for your special day.

* Are you looking for a topper that is eco-friendly and can be eaten or put into the compost (e.g  flowers)? Would you prefer to have a plastic molded token that you can then save as a fun memento of your special day? Would you prefer to have a crystal topper that can be put on display in your home afterwards?

Hopefully these questions will help you to focus on the type of wedding cake topper you really want, and help you to narrow your search on what you both truly want for your cake.

As the plans for your wedding day evolve, you may well find that your original thoughts on a cake topper will change. This will not cause a problem so long as you are able to pick out the final topper in plenty of time for the caterer or the cake decorator to add it on to the wedding cake.

You could try and tie in the flowers on the cake to the same colors and types as the flowers you are using to decorate the reception.   Another great thing about wedding cakes with fresh flowers, is that the flowers can be kept as a souvenir. When you order your flower arrangement, it’s very important to tell your florist that the flowers will be used on the cake.  This is because some flowers are poisonous like Lily of the Valley, and others are treated with pesticides and so on.   When you are getting wedding cakes with fresh flowers, it is a far safer option to go in for edible flowers like carnations, chrysanthemums, dandelions, fuchsias, gardenias, gladiolus, hibiscus, jasmine, lavender, pansies, marigold, lilac, primrose, violet, and so on.

There are many methods of decorating the wedding cake with fresh flowers:

1 – one of the simplest ways is to just spread flower petals all over the cake.
2 – the cake tier can be made of flowers.
3 - keep a bunch of flowers over the topmost tier and keep strings of flowers flowing down to the lower ones.
4 – keep the sides of each tier decorated with flowers. The whole cake should be decorated in the same way.

The way you go about assembling your wedding cake with fresh flowers will depend quite a bit on yor on personal taste and the theme you have chosen for your wedding. 

Of course, if fresh flowers, are really not to your taste then you can explore many other options for making flowers to put on your wedding cake.  For instance you could use gumpaste as this can be easily shaped like a flower, and it becomes stronger as it dries.  You could try marzipan, or fondant icing.

Another option is to use sugared fresh flowers.  All you need to do is to paint the flowers with egg whites and then you sprinkle them with icing or finely ground sugar.  This will give the flowers a very pretty frosted look.

Your budget, reception conditions, favorite cake and icing flavors, the number of invited guests and even your cake topper will affect wedding cake designs. Many bakeries and cake designers will have floor samples in their shops of traditional or common cakes they have done in the past.  These samples can be tweaked with a few touches to create a cake unique for your wedding.

Of course, you might have seen a cake design in a magazine that you simply must have. Bring the picture with you when you meet with the bakery or cake designer.

A Time and Place
The time of your wedding and its location can dictate what wedding cake designs you will choose from. For instance, some frostings do not hold up well in warm conditions like whipped toppings while marzipan “sweats” if not properly stored in cold conditions. An air conditioned reception hall or other location is optimal and invites more creativity in ingredients when creating the cakes.

Size Matters
The number of guests you anticipate may dictate your choice in wedding cake designs. The more people who attend then the more expensive the cake becomes. To save money yet still present a fancy front, have the cake designer bake some regular sheet cakes with the filling and frosting you want and keep them hidden. For the bridal cake, the baker can create a few fake layers to give the illusion of an expensive cake when in actuality, there is only one or two layers you cut through while the hidden sheet cakes are cut and divvied up for the guests.

All According to Taste
Vanilla and chocolate are two flavors that make their way into many wedding cake designs. After all, these two flavors are the most popular in bakeries and count as a large percentage of sales. However, you do not have to settle with just these two flavors. Have each cake layer have a different flavor or choose a unique cake filling to jazz things up a bit. After all, it is YOUR day.

Incorporate Memories
Wedding cake designs should reflect the bride (and groom) and what better way than choosing a favorite memory and bringing it to life – in a cake! If one or both of you have Celtic roots, perhaps have the cake decorated in a special coat of arms design. Off-road biking or ATV enthusiasts could have a cake shaped like a mountain with marzipan or sugar flowers, grass and trees adorning it. Many wedding cake designers are true artists and can bring a number of your favorite memories to life.
